Mike Buckland: Juror


Mike is Director of Production at Triggerfish Animation which, under his leadership, has become Africa’s first truly global studio trusted by leading streamers and content distributors worldwide.

As one of South Africa’s animation pioneers, Mike has produced award-winning film and television titles including the full-length animated feature films Adventures in Zambezia, Khumba and more recently, Seal Team which is streaming on Netflix.

He also co-produced the Oscar-nominated Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, and the Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler stories Stick Man, The Highway Rat, Zog, and The Snail and the Whale – all produced for the BBC by Magic Light Pictures.

Isaac Mogajane: Juror & Mentor

Diprente Films

Helmed by Isaac alongside co-founders Tamsin Andersson and Kagiso Lediga, Diprente is an independent Johannesburg-based producer of live action and animated content. Diprente has produced works such as the Emmy-nominated series, Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, the award-winning Bantu Hour with Hugh Masekela, the first African Netflix Original series, Queen Sono, as well as the feature films Catching Feelings, Matwetwe and Blitz Patollie. On the animation side, Diprente Junior is a company dedicated to producing authentic animated series and films that represent modern day Africa in an honest and well-rounded way. It currently has projects in development with numerous studios all around the world.

Karla de La Bat: Juror

V&A Waterfront

An urban planner and graduate Urban Designer, Karla is an experienced planner, skilled in design and geo-spatial software. She also holds a Master’s degree in Urban, Community and Regional Planning.

Recently handpicked for the role of ‘Placemaker Specialist’ at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, she has been tasked with transforming public spaces to best enhance the wellbeing both of the nature of the space, and of the visitors to that space, strengthening the connection between the two with an intention to create a good sense of place and enhance a strong sense of community and wellbeing.

Beyond Reel Entertainment

Besides being the co-founder and executive producer of Beyond Reel Entertainment, Karabo is also Marketing Director for the non-profit Reel Partners, and Festival Director for the Creative Youth Festival. 

Currently based in the US, Karabo has over 10 years of experience in film, from being a creative researcher at Velocity Films and Giant Films, to writing, directing, and producing short films, music videos, animation films and documentaries.

In the last 3 years Beyond Reel Entertainment has produced three short films, three animation short films, and two music albums, and is currently developing a feature film, feature documentary film and a TV series.

Colin Payne: Juror

Triggerfish Academy

A worthy CEO of Triggerfish Academy, Colin has over 20 years of experience in both digital and physical design, including interaction, experience, information, UI, UX, VR, AR, game, and exhibition design as well as fine art production. He finds a particular joy in overseeing an efficient and well-considered design process from beginning to end.

The Triggerfish Academy is partnered with the likes of Disney and Netflix as well as Triggerfish, and Colin heads a team which offers free courses and develops content based on the expertise of many experienced animators.

Play Nice Pictures

Tshepo is a writer, director, creator, and activist “and all-round good human being”. She spent her early years developing and writing live-action films and series and currently works as an Executive Creative Consultant and Writer with a focus on youth development and education, the African narrative and social/gender-based subject matter. Play Nice is passionate about telling stories, creating characters and building empires by working with creatives on the continent. We develop and create content, with a specific focus on Africa, and have worked with Disney, eOne, Wekids, Baobab Studios, Snipple Animation, Netflix, Lucan and Triggerfish Animation Studios.


Tim Argall: Juror & Mentor


Tim was among a handful of animators who pioneered the South African animation industry in the early 90’s. There were no local schools back then, so he learned the craft from books, observation and heaps of practice. Tim began his journey in 3D with the first release of Maya in 1998 – doing character animation and visual-effects for film. He then founded his own studio, Bugbox – a boutique studio focused on character animation in both 2D and 3D. Bugbox has produced animated brand characters and commercials for the likes of Kelloggs, Nestle, Lego and Coca-Cola.
Specialties: 2D and 3D Animation, Direction, Storyboards and Animatics, Screenwriting, Character Design, Voice Direction and Studio Supervision.
